Some more Food for thought
I’m going to continue on here with some more stuff about the thought processes behind writing beats, brain food stuff if you will. Don’t you worry yourself too much as I’ll get on with some more of the geeky stuff soon enough and let me tell you there is plenty of more stuff to come. The one like Axiom (Switzerland) is visiting little old Syndey town to smash up the dance and yes, there has been a little studio action! So hold on to your horses people, there is good times ahead!
The Big Picture
It’s hard to change at the best of times and this can be painfully true when it comes to making beats as well. We all get caught up with starting tunes a certain way, you know what I mean. Drums first then bass etc. Reaching for the same synth patch and that same funk break you’ve used before a million times over. In next to no time you’ve probably managed to cook up something that half resembles a tune! This is all good except for the fact that it sounds like every other tune you’ve written in the last three months! Not to mention all the current riff raff out there!
Oh dear! Now instead of taking a step back you figure that it’s probably down to not working hard enough and so you dedicate more time into this crazy music.
There has to be a better way!
Same thing in: Same thing out!
And it’s been that way probably throughout the history of time itself. Take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror and try some new things. That’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve started to write some dubstep and I’ve started sampling all my old cd collection. I love it! It most definitely has picked up my game and I’m making music from a another angle now. If I can keep doing what I’m doing and stay focused on my goals I should have a few fresh new dubs to play out on the weekend! Wicked!
Being aware of how something works and doesn’t work is vital to not only music but life. Like I said earlier, its easy to forget what was working for you in the all the madness around you. If you have a clear focus and constantly re-evaluate your goals you’ll get far in life. No doubt.
Hope this stuff helps.
See you on the dancefloor.
